How To Wash Gloves

Learn how to wash gloves to keep them looking their best, even if they’re made of leather. Washing gloves in a washing machine and drying them in a dryer is rarely recommended; however, gloves can be successfully washed and dried by hand when proper care is taken. Don’t discard your favorite pair of gloves because they’re worn and soiled. Give them a facelift and you can keep wearing them for seasons to come.

Things you'll need:

  • Mild liquid soap
  • Lukewarm water
  • Hair conditioner
  • Dry towel
  • Container (optional)
  1. Fill a sink or container with lukewarm water. Depending on the materials used to make the gloves, hot water is not recommended as it could prompt shrinking of the fibers. Lukewarm water will help remove soil effectively, while minimizing the risk of shrinking.
  2. Add a small amount of mild liquid soap to the water.  Any mild soap will do–even a mild shampoo works well. Use your hand to mix the soap and water.
  3. Add the gloves to the soapy water. Squeeze the gloves in the water several times to allow the soapy water to wash the fibers. Be careful not to wring or twist the material as this could cause damage to the seams or the shape of the gloves.
  4. Allow gloves to soak for no more than 30 minutes. Gloves that are heavily soiled may need to soak in order to loosen grime. Be sure to occasionally squeeze the gloves while soaking to help remove loosened soil.
  5. Drain soapy water. Squeeze excess water from gloves, then rinse gloves under running lukewarm water.
  6. Condition gloves before drying. Fill a sink or container with lukewarm water and add a small amount of hair conditioner to the water, mixing the conditioner and water with your hand. Add the gloves to the water and gently squeeze the conditioned water through the gloves. Remove the gloves from the water and rinse under running lukewarm water.
  7. Lay gloves flat to dry. Gently squeeze excess water from gloves and lay gloves flat on a towel to dry. Reposition occasionally to a dry area of the towel. Avoid placing gloves in direct heat or sunlight to facilitate drying.

How To Dry Ski Gloves

After a long day of having fun on the slopes, you're gloves are soaked, and you want to learn how to dry ski gloves correctly. You want to  hit the slopes again shortly, but you want nice dry gloves, instead of damp soggy ones. By building a simple wooden stand to hold your gloves, they will air dry naturally, and in no time, they'll be dry. Letting them air dry is the best method to dry ski gloves, since other methods may destroy them. As an added bonus, you can use this jig as a football goalpost when you and your buddies are playing paper football.

To build a jig to dry ski gloves, you'll need:

  • 2 by 6 pine stock, cut 18 inches long straight across
  • wooden dowel stock, 1/2 inch diameter
  • tape measure
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • carpenter's square
  • electric drill
  • half inch spade or paddle bit
  • hand saw or coping saw
  • coarse sandpaper
  • fine sandpaper
  • hammer
  • masking tape
  1. Measure four inches in from each side of the 2 by 6 stock. It doesn't have to be precise, this is just a simple jig to dry ski gloves. However, you should try to get it as close as possible.
  2. Use your ruler or carpenter's square, and draw a line, straight across,  at each of 4 inch measure.  If you have done this correctly, you will have two parallel lines spaced ten inches apart.
  3. Find the middle of the 2 by 6. Since a 2 by 6 is usually about 5 and 1/2 inches wide, this will be about 3 and 3/4 inches in from the side.
  4. Use your ruler or carpenter's square, draw a line down the middle of the 2 by 6. Notice that this line crosses the two lines you drew in step two. Where the lines meet, you will drill your holes.
  5. Using your tape measure, pencil, and saw, mark then cut two dowels 16 inches long. Don't worry if its a little off, remember, this is just a jig to dry ski gloves.
  6.  Place a 1/2 inch paddle bit in the chuck of your drill motor. Tighten it down the bit with your chuck key.
  7. Drill two holes, straight down, in the 2 by 6 where the lines cross. Try to get the holes as straight up and down as possible. But again, don't worry if they're a little off. You're building a stand to dry ski gloves, not the space shuttle.
  8. Hammer in the two dowels into the holes. These should have a nice snug fit. If they are loose, don't worry, just wrap masking tape around the ends of the dowels, then hammer them in. The tape will take up the slack.
  9. Sand all edges smooth. Use first your coarse, then fine sandpaper. Now you're all done. You now have a goalpost looking  stand to dry ski gloves. Slide your ski gloves over the goalposts, and let them  air dry overnight.

Never dry ski gloves in a clothes dryer. To do so is an invitation to ruin them. The extreme heat of the dryer will shrink the cloth, wad up the insulation, and possibly ruin them for good. Slow air drying is the best way to dry ski gloves.

If you do not have the tools, time, or the knowledge base of woodworking to do this, take these instructions to a local carpenter or woodworking shop. For a small fee, they'll be able to whip this up in no time.

Properly fitted hockey gloves are a key component to overall safety and the ability to properly hold and control a hockey stick. They appear large, but in reality, they are only large due to the amount of padding. The overall hand measure of a hockey glove in no different from any other type glove. For hockey, there are two basic types of gloves or mitts. The goalie mitt and the glove or mitt for the offensive and defensive player.

How to measure hockey glove sizes:

  1. Select from a few styles and manufactures. Ask a sales associate if you need help making your selection.
  2. Place your hand into the glove. The first measuring key point is the position of the index finger.
  3. Your index finger should be at the very edge of the glove. In fact, you should be able to notice your finger as it presses against the end of the glove, which is called the gusset. The reason this is important is because, this will allow you to control and grip the hockey stick. If the finger does not reach this point, it will be harder to grip the hockey stick. Further, as the hockey glove begins to wear it will stretch, making it harder to manage the hockey stick

5 Martial Arts Punching Bag Training Tips

Here are 5 martial arts punching bag training tips to help you get a more effective workout. Hitting the heavy bag puts a tremendous strain on your hands and wrists, so be sure to use some tape or wraps to provide support. If you also intend to kick the heavy bag, consider using shin pads to prevent any lower leg injuries. Tape your ankles as well to give you extra protection, and buy a small mouthpiece to use during your workouts.

  1. Write down a workout plan based on your experience level. When you are new to martial arts, do not try to overdo it at first. If you are taking lessons, ask your instructor to help you design a workout that will coincide with what he is teaching you at the time. Have him give you some tips on striking techniques to help you avoid injury when hitting the heavy bag.
  2. Warm up and then start to hit the punching bag with some easy punches. Gradually start to increase the intensity of your kicks and punches, and move around the punching bag. Vary the location of your bag strikes, and keep your head moving as you would during a real fight.
  3. Take a rest after a few minutes and get a drink. Consider jumping some rope if you want to work on your cardio even more. Head back to the bag and try to pick up the pace for the next part of your workout. Work some elbow and knees strikes in with your kicks and punches, and use the proper technique to prevent an injury.
  4. Pound on the punching bag until you are gassed. As you become more accustomed to bag training, you will be able to increase the duration of your workouts. Ride a stationary bike or do some roadwork to help your endurance for future bag workouts. See how your equipment is holding up, and make sure your joints are able to handle the strain of the bag work or you may need to dial it down a notch.
  5. Keep a journal of your punching bag workouts. Include how long you were able to maintain decent intensity as you hit the bag. Identify any weaknesses you need to work on so you can focus on these areas the next time you hit the bag.

Roller hockey gloves are one of those things that need to fit perfectly, and learning how to choose roller hockey gloves can easily ensure this. Playing roller hockey in gloves that are either too big, too small or uncomfortable can be really annoying after awhile, which is why you should take the time to make sure that you choose roller hockey gloves that suit you perfectly. Here are some steps that will help you on your journey to choosing roller hockey gloves.

  1. Size. Getting the right roller hockey glove size is everything. You want to get gloves that will fit you just right so that they aren’t coming of your hands, or cutting off your blood flow. You should also try purchasing gloves that are adjustable, so that if you want your glove to be a certain size one day you can easily adjust it.

The right gloves are a good investment, so take the time to choose roller hockey gloves that are best suited for you.

Need to know how to buy padded football gloves? Padded football gloves are gloves that you wear to protect your hands when you play football.  Overall, the buying process takes very little effort and very little time.

  1. Find a store, local or online.  In order to buy padded football gloves, you must find a store.  You can find either a local sports store or an online sports store. A department store may have what you need, but an actual sports store is a better place to go if you can.  If you already have a good local or online store in mind, you're all set and may skip to step two.  If you haven't, then you can search for one online or by looking at ads in the newspapers.  Once you have found a local store, you should consider giving them a call to find out if they have padded football gloves in stock.
  2. Find the football section of the store.  You need to locate the section of the store that has the padded football gloves.  If you are in a local store, you can probably find the football section by simply walking around.  However, if you can't find it ask a worker.  In using an online store, you will have to find the football section on the site by using the search or looking for the "football" tab.
  3. Find the padded football gloves.  In this step, you'll need to find the padded football gloves.  If searching at a local store, simply browse the football section of the store to find the padded football gloves or ask for assistance.  If using an online store, you may have to find a link or category that says "Padded Football Gloves" or some other variation.
  4. Determine the size.  If you are buying the gloves for a child, you should choose the "Youth Football Gloves".  However if your child has large hands, the "Adult Football Gloves" should fit nicely. If buying the gloves for an adult then you should buy the "Adult Football Gloves". Other than size, other specifications of the glove are purely a matter of preference. Think about what features you want your gloves to have, and look for the products that have those features.
  5. Choose a product wisely. It doesn't matter whether you are in an online store or not, you want to choose a product that has a good cost to quality ratio.  You shouldn't look for the cheapest product because it is likely that it is not very high in quality.  Then again, you shouldn't look for the most expensive product either because of its cost.  Instead, you want to look for a product that is relatively high in quality and relatively low in cost as well.
  6. Buy the product and play football safely!

Wipe the excess off on your pads, then see if your grip is better. Repeat this during the game if it works well for you since you will need to keep receiver gloves sticky each time you try to catch a pass.
  4. Apply an adhesive spray to the gloves. Ask your football team’s equipment manager for some spray if you cannot find any. You may not be able to use the spray during a game, so apply it after you finish and let it soak in. Practice receiving some passes from the quarterback the next time you play and see if your gloves are sticky enough to control the ball. 1. Offensive linemen need to use gloves for football that have pads. These pads help protect the lineman’s hands during a block. Many linemen use athletic tape to wrap around the part of the gloves that is on their wrists. This helps to keep the gloves in place and also provides some extra support to the lineman’s wrists.
  2. A wide receiver uses gloves for football that are durable and lightweight. In the old days receivers never used gloves, but in the modern era nearly every receiver has a pair on during a game. The gloves help keep the receiver’s hands warm and provide extra grip to catch a pass from the quarterback.
  3. Running backs also need gloves to help them hold onto the football. Almost all running backs use gloves for football. These players get hit nearly every time they run the ball, so the gloves help them grip the ball and also provide some protection from the defensive player’s facemask or cleats during a tackle.
  4. Defensive backs need to use gloves for football. Safeties and cornerbacks try to intercept a pass, so they need gloves just like a wide receiver uses. These players also have to make tackles, and the gloves help them hold onto the ball carrier while they try to bring them down.

How To Shrink Polyester Gloves

$

0

You may need to know how to shrink polyester gloves if you accidently purchased them too large. Polyester is a popular choice of material because they are made to be resistant to stretching and shrinking. They are easy to wash and mildew resistant. Although they are made tough and resistant to shrinking, there is a way to get them to shrink by using a heat method.

 Items needed:

  • Hot Water
  • Clothes dryer
  • Laundry detergent (optional)

Steps

  1. Turn the gloves inside out before shrinking. This will keep the outside color of the gloves from fading. Make sure the fingers are pulled out and not bunched together which could cause wrinkles during the heat drying process.
  2. Place the gloves in the washing machine with the hottest possible setting. If you want to use this time to wash the gloves add a small amount of liquid laundry detergent. If the gloves are a bright color, you may prefer to not to wash them in the washing machine with hot water. You can wash or rinse them in the sink instead. Most of the shrinkage will be done in the hot dryer.
  3. Prepare to dry the gloves on the highest heat your dryer will allow. Make sure the fingers of the gloves are still straight and not bunched together. Allow the gloves to dry completely in the dryer. Polyester will not shrink if you remove them before they are completely dry. The complete absence of moisture is what will allow the fibers to shrink.
  4. Remove the gloves from the dryer while they are still hot. Play with the fingers again to make sure they are holding their form. Allow the polyester gloves to cool enough where you can comfortable turn them right side out. Put them on your hands to allow them to finish cooling. This will allow them to maintain their shape and mold to your hands for the perfect fit.
  5. Determine if your gloves are still to large. If so, repeat the above steps again to shrink polyester gloves even more.

Tips: More shrinkage can be obtained by using a hot iron on damp gloves. However, this method is not recommend because the small size of the gloves can make them difficult to hold flat while ironing without burning yourself. Proceed with caution if you try it.

If you play football, depending on the position that you play, you may need to learn how to break in football gloves. It takes a little while to break in football gloves, so only use them in a game if you are sure they will help you. Many players have more than one pair of football gloves they use in a game, so they have a backup if one of the gloves accidentally tears.

To break in football gloves you need:

  • Gloves
  • Football
  • Throwing partner
  1. Put on your gloves and loosen them up. When you need to break in football gloves, wearing them a lot is the best thing you can do. Even if you are not on the football field, you can still wear them at home and move your fingers around to help break them in. Don’t pull the gloves too tight or you may tear or stretch them.
  2. Ask a friend to throw the football around to break in football gloves. This will help you get used to catching the football with your new gloves on. Ask your friend to throw you some passes until you are comfortable using the gloves to catch with.
  3. Keep opening and closing your hands between passes to break in football gloves faster. Adjust the gloves if they become too loose when you are throwing the ball with your friend. You can also take them off and let them dry a little, then put them back on to help break them in.
  4. Take care of your gloves when you are not wearing them. Don’t leave them balled up in your gym bag or they may not give you enough grip during a game. When you are trying to break in football gloves, spread them out in the open so they can air dry. Wear them every day even if it’s only for a few minutes, so they stay formed to your hands.

Winter is here, and she appears to be in a bit of a foul mood.

Fortunately, there’s clothing that will make waiting for your car to heat up or walking through the windy streets of any city—except maybe Buffalo—just a bit more tolerable.

While we can’t all be Roald Amundsen (above), we can at least stay warm… and look good doing it.

fjallraven-hatFjällräven G-1000 HeaterFjällräven’s original G-1000 fabric is quick-drying, hard-wearing and tightly woven. With this hat ($60), it’s joined on the inside by warm pile fleece and on the outside by a comfy blend of polyester and cotton. It’s even got some earflaps with little holes so you can hear everything from oncoming traffic to the crackle of a fire at the foot of a mountain after a hard day’s hike.

craghoppers-clevelandCraghoppers Cleveland Jacket: The Cleveland ($180) is for the stylish yet rugged type who wants to maintain a studied outer appearance with Oxford shoulder and elbow patches that say, “Hey, I might be a professor, too.” Weatherproof with a ribbed inner collar, zipoff hood, adjustable hem and stormflap with inner zip guard, plus a bevy of pockets (including a map pocket, you adventurer, you!), this jacket doesn’t mess around with the cold or your comfort.

adidas-terrex-swiftAdidas Terrex Swift Hooded Primaloft Jacket: Forged from breathable PrimaLoft Sport—a proprietary water-repellent, wind-resistant insulation material—this jacket ($70) is a little leaner and meaner than, say, the Cleveland. It’ll keep you cozy during exercise on those winter days that are cool without being extremity-numbing cold.

dakine-sentinel-gloveDakine Sentinel Glove: Proprietary D3O padding in these mitts ($45) coats the back of the hand and palms for flexible shock absorption, while synthetic suede, microfleece thumb panels and silicone gripper fingertips round out a round-up of clever materials for ultimate hand comfort and functionality in cold and/or wet weather. So go ahead, glove up and feel free to do anything from gripping the bars on a running Harley to delicately composing a 3 a.m. text to your ex.

icebreaker-socksIcebreaker Men’s Over-the-Calf Ski Socks: A blend of merino wool and nylon with a pinch of Lycra make these bad boys ($23) durable, warm and breathable. They’re even strategically cushioned. (No seriously, they have something called a “function junction” that reduces bulk by minimizing stitching.) Who says you need to be a skier to enjoy the benefits of saving your limbs from the icy grip of frostbite?

sorel-bootsSorel Conquest Men’s Winter Boots: Kill the cold, circumvent the snow and dominate the day with these sub-zero-ready, super-comfy bad boys ($145). Baseball season is now in full swing—ba-dum-tshhh. And while you’re not playing in the big leagues, you’re still somewhat hopeful that you’ll be dubbed a sweet defensive name like “Death to Flying Things” in your near future. But you’ve still got some work to do at bat.

Take your game to the next level with the Easton Power Sensor from Motion By Blast. Attach the sensor to the knob of any brand or model bat with the attachment slip, and then capture, analyze and improve your swing via the precision swing motion sensor, which is always on. You can actually record video of your swings in the Easton Power Sensor app and Blast’s patented Smart Video Capture technology, which will automatically identify your swings and clip your video to create a series of HD highlights, overlaid with your metrics–swing speed, time to contact, swing direction, power, efficiency and more.

But maybe you’re not getting the power you want to see displayed in those videos and you want to improve your contact-hitting toward the gap or power-hitting to clear the fence. POWERHANDZ Baseball Pure Grip weighted training gloves distribute weight across the top side of your hands with gripped palms (similar to baseball batting gloves), to increase your bat control, power and speed. You’ll get there in no time.

Before you know it, you’ll be hitting home runs that’ll far surpass the myths of Mickey Mantle.
